Welcome to Dr. Kate Brilakis' Learning Portal

sperm production =
spermatogenesis

2 forms of eukaryotic cell division:
Mitosis and Meiosis

sperm production =
spermatogenesis

review question:
list the major happenings that occur during mitosis

Mitosis in plant cells

mitosis occurs for:

Meiosis

female:
one egg

produced

egg production
=
oogenesis

extra credit question:
synapsis (crossing over) occurs during meiosis. What is the purpose of this process?

synapsis/crossing over occur only during meiosis

egg production =
oogenesis

 below is FYI...

review question:

how are the products of mitosis different than the products of meiosis

Mitosis in animal cells

extra credit:
explain how and why the products of spermatogenesis differ from the products of oogensis.

this is a karyotype of a human's chromosomes.
human have 46 chromosomes
in their somatic (non-sex) cells
represented as 23 pairs of chromosomes.

1/2 of each pair is originally donated by the father's sperm.
1/2 of each pair is originally donated by the mother's egg.

fusion of the two creates a zygote which via mitosis may grow into a human.

 Mitosis = somatic cell division
growth/repair/maintenance

review question:
explain how cytokinesis in plant cells is similar to binary fission in bacteria.

<- cytokinesis

 Meiosis =
gamete production

male:
four sperm
 produced

Mitosis
